Yes, I know that D. Kucinich has a snowballs chance in hell for winning, but I for one would cast my useless primary vote for Kucinich just because of the H. It is an amusing and unnerving read, but what was really getting to me was the realization that someone lived this dysfunction shit. It’s not just an unbalanced fictional characters drying human shit on the back picnic table or smothering the family cat to death over a dream, it’s someone’s family.

Who, I may add, has their family dirty laundry (so to speak) all over the New York Times best seller list.

I wondered if the family knew, I’m thinking its probably awkward for co-workers to read about how your mom use it sit in the living room and eat dog food.

One Wikipidea search later reveals a wonderful little interview Vanity Fair did with the remaining “Finch” family. Their response to the book: a lawsuit is pending. They family claims that a majority of the really outrageous things mentioned in the book were false and inflammatory.

Which brings me to questions of the memoir and ‘truth’ and why it doesn’t pay to know writers.

I don’t think it really matter if the things in the book are true or not, if it was all made up and sold as a novel I don’t think there would be a problem. A little truth in a fiction doesn’t harm anything.

For me this is the uncomfortable thing about running with scissors, that its outrageous truths may not be real. unlike fake memoirs, which I think are amusing, this book creates a fake history that millions of readers believe to be true, leaving the people’s who lives it is to deal with the consequences. A little fiction in your memoir, especially one as potently detrimental as this, is problematic. The name and place change of the people was sloppy and if it were me, I’d be really mad too. What if my friends and co-workers read the book? The book takes place when a majority of the family is young, but that still doesn’t detract from the beyond embarrassing things in the book that all can’t be chalked up to youth. Who knows how friends would react to you, thinking you did weird thinks like that in your youth.

On that note, keep an eye out for writers and hope no one is writing in their memoir all the bad judgment calls and coke binge lovers you never talk about.

to those who know me personaly: i would never do that to ya'll without at least hiding behind the guise of fiction...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://uppityblacklooks.blogspot.com/2007/01/this-book-is-likeoh-you-know-dont-make.html' title='This book is like.....oh you know.
